What Is Food Foundations?

Food Foundations is an 8-week online course designed to put you in the driver’s seat of your health and food choices. We recognize that each person is a complex case, but we believe with the right skills (that don’t start or end with weighing your food), each individual can be successful.

Liam McVarnock

Liam McVarnock

Liam McVarnock, a certified nutritionist (Precision Nutrition Level 2), certified Personal Trainer, and founder of Ludus Wellness, specializes in building sustainable nutrition systems for busy high performers. 

Liam is originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia and moved to Calgary in 2023 to further pursue his career ambitions.

Outside of coaching, Liam leads from the front: completing double Ironman-distance triathlons and chasing a sub-3-hour marathon – proving what’s possible when your body is trained and fuelled with purpose.

FAQs

Is an assessment of my current nutrition included?

In Food Foundations, you will do a self-assessment which is included in the program – and we will provide specific and detailed instructions on what to do with each item in the assessment.

If you opt to pay for the Bundled Food Foundations Program which includes 1-1 sessions (via Zoom), you will get a chance to do an even deeper dive into our assessments while asking your coach questions along the way.

What types of symptoms should not be doing this program?

Anything from fatigue or anxiety, to sex drive and reproductive concerns, to skin/hair/nail conditions, to gut disturbances (Chrohn’s disease, IBS) and more, can and have been linked to nutrition, but aren’t always fixed with a diet change alone. While your specific instance may not be due to nutritional concerns, we have specific guidance throughout the program into what would be more appropriate for a Registered Dietician, a Naturopath, or a Doctor.

What is a pro metabolic diet?

A pro metabolic diet is once that supports our bodies, hormones, and activity level through true and proven science. Using nutrients in good whole food, we lead each individual to lean how combinations of nutrients can work for you best by listening to your body, and no one else.

In level 2 of Food Foundations (not out yet) – we will go into more depth on these topics.

Is this led by a Registered Dietician?

No, but Nick is certified as a Precision Nutrition Coach and in Ray Peat’s nutritional systems. His additional biochemistry research makes him a rare find, and rounds out this metabolic-focused nutrition course and individual sessions.

Is this covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans don’t cover this service, but some health spending accounts will. Please contact your specific insurance provider to learn if you have any coverage for nutrition-related coaching services.

What type of nutrition philosophy is this program aligned with? Keto? Low or high carb? High protein? Intermittened fasting?

Our nutrition philosophy does not directly align with any of those specific diets, because we believe you should ditch the diet and focus on your health and how to nourish yourself first and foremost. Nutrition, and gut health, is linked to everything from skin health, to fertility, to the level of performance you will achieve.

Why is this program the anti diet?

With this program, you won’t follow a fad diet. You won’t get all crazy and restrictive about food, and you don’t follow a black-and-white good-or-bad dogma with nutrition. We work with you to educate you about nutrition can support your health. We will help you find your “one small thing” and figure out what small things you can do differently to yield the maximum results possible.

Is this program good for busy people?

Yes. We work on making our course available fully online and remote so you can access it any time, and forever!
