Putting the "C" back in "S+C"

Conditioning is one of the biggest levers for performance, injury prevention, and client confidence. Yet it’s often the least understood part of an athlete’s plan.

You’ve likely taken courses packed with jargon and theories that sound impressive but don’t hold up when a real client is standing in front of you with knee pain, a funky gait pattern, or a race deadline.

Strength education is everywhere. Conditioning education? Not so much.

You don’t need more noise.
You need a system that makes sense.

The Conditioning Workshop gives you a clear, science-driven framework to analyze gait and prescribe conditioning that you can put to work immediately.

Who This Workshop Is For

This workshop is for S+C coaches, personal trainers, and rehab professionals who work with athletes or endurance athletes like cyclists and marathoners.

You’ll get the most value if you want to:

Know when it’s safe and productive to load a runner with a funky gait pattern

Build conditioning plans for any sport, including complex clients

Understand how gait mechanics drive injury risk, speed, power, and capacity

Integrate conditioning into return-to-sport rehab without losing rehab gains

Stop referring your clients out for gait and running assessments

Become a sought-after expert in gait analysis and conditioning for performance

Learn from coaches with Olympic, professional, and high-performance experience

New For 2026

Expanded running, rehab and cutting mechanics

Athletes don’t move in straight lines. Seeing things through a rotational lens helps to spot and understand complex cases.

We’ve expanded the curriculum to include:

Running Injury Rehab for Common Problems
  • Hamstring strains & return-to-speed progressions
  • Knee pain patterns (PFPS, ITB, meniscus-related gait considerations)
  • Achilles & calf-related running mechanics
  • Foot/ankle issues (plantar fasciitis, midfoot collapse, tibial stress issues)
cutting + Change of direction (COD)
  • How gait shapes COD readiness (late stance mechanics, switching, hip rotation)
  • Coaching shapes for acceleration, deceleration, and directional changes
  • Return-to-sport progressions using gait-derived KPIs (force plate or field-based)
  • Practical sessions on warm-ups, volumes, and periodization for COD

New For 2026

Pre-Workshop Online Module (3 Hrs)

We’ve redesigned the weekend so you spend less time sitting and more time doing by including a self-paced biomechanics and exercise module covering:

The 4-part gait model we use to assess any athlete’s running, sprinting, cycling, or skating.

How movement mechanics influence load management, energy leaks, and injury risk.

How to film and analyze gait using our step-by-step framework.

The essentials of exercise physiology and how energy systems shape conditioning.

How to profile an athletes movement and physiology to identify their true training gaps.

What you'll Learn

Gait analysis that makes sense

Learn to assess walking, running, sprinting, cycling and how rotational sequencing relates directly to injury risk and athletic performance without drowning in jargon. We simplify gait so you can develop a keen eye for what matters, coach it clearly, and program with purpose.

Testing + PRogramming for any sport

Conditioning becomes easy when you understand the physiology behind it. We’ll dive into energy systems, how to select or modify tests, and how to tailor conditioning to the athlete in front of you, whether they’re a sprinter, a marathoner, a hockey player, or a general fitness client without the need for cookie-cutter interval prescriptions.

Real-World Examples

No hypothetical slides. We break down real athletes, troubleshoot their gait patterns, walk through case studies, run small-group labs, and show our full coaching process from assessment → decision-making → programming.

Meet Your Hosts

carla robbins

Carla Robbins, MKin, CSEP-CEP

Carla created Vital over a decade ago as a way of working with athletes and individuals with a more detail-oriented, individualized, and careful approach. After completing her Masters in Kinesiology, she has worked with athletes at the international & Olympic level in elite triathlon, bobsleigh, and track. Over the years, Carla has continued to grow Vital’s client base to the point of a constant waitlist. It’s her unique approach to applying the science to each individual to get them the best results that has catapulted Vital as a front-runner.

Her current client roster varies from Kona Ironman qualifiers, to ultramarathoners, to the University of Calgary Women’s Hockey team, to individuals with acute and chronic injuries.

Nicholas Simpson, BScKin, CSCS

Nick joined Vital after close to a decade of working with high performance athletes – having coached multiple medal winning athletes at the international & Olympic level in speed skating & swimming. This gave him a unique insight into the integrative approach it takes to push boundaries far past the norm. Nick’s extensive knowledge about biochemistry, energy systems, and how to develop physical qualities comes to life in his ability to take principles and turn out performance increases in everyone he works with.

His current client roster varies from powerlifters, to runners, to gymnasts and biathletes, to individuals with acute and chronic injuries, and even stroke.

FAQs

Will there be other workshops in the future?

Yes – this workshop runs annually, and may run in additional cities in the future. However, each workshop cohort has limited spots. Most attendees say they wish they’d come sooner. If you can make this year’s event, we recommend securing a seat.

Do you offer student discounts?

Yes. We offer a limited number of student-rate seats each year. If you’re a full-time student in a recognized program, email us to request availability.

Is this worth professional development credits?
  • Yes. The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) has accredited this workshop for 20 CSEP Professional Development Credits (PDCs).
  • When you attend, your credits are automatically approved once you provide proof of attendance. We expect to add NSCA CEUs in the future as well.
Do you have an online-only option if I can't make it to Calgary or the host city?
  • Not at this time. The workshop is intentionally designed to be hands-on—with gait labs, sprint mechanics practicals, partner assessments, conditioning test demos, and small-group coaching that cannot be replicated online.
  • However, the pre-workshop online biomechanics and physiology modules are available globally, and we’re exploring a fully online version for 2026+.
  • If you want to be notified about new locations or online offerings, join our mailing list.
Do I need a background in gait or conditioning before attending?

No. You’ll come in with the basics from the pre-workshop online modules, and we’ll take you from foundational concepts to advanced application – step by step. Coaches, physios, chiros, trainers, and students all learn at the level they’re ready for.

Will I feel overwhelmed if I'm new to gait analysis?

Absolutely not. We use a simplified, global framework that finally makes gait make sense. Most attendees say this was the first time gait actually “clicked.”

How much of the workshop is hands-on?

About 70%. We’ve intentionally redesigned 2025 to be highly practical, with live labs, video analysis, partner assessments, breakouts, sprint mechanics coaching, conditioning test demos, and real case studies.

What if I don't work with runners?

Perfect. The majority of our attendees coach hockey players, field sport athletes, court sport athletes, strength athletes, and general population clients. Gait and conditioning apply to every sport because every athlete has to move, load tissue, and tolerate volume.

Can I bring a client's video or case study to analyze?

Yes. We actually encourage it. Real cases make the workshop even more valuable.

Will I get access to the workbook, videos, and slides after?

Yes. The workbook is yours to keep, and all unlisted drill and demo videos are accessible forever.

Do I receive a certificate?

Yes. You’ll receive a signed certificate documenting attendance and professional development hours.
