Unlock Your Potential: VO₂ Max Testing in Calgary for Performance and Longevity

Carla Robbins

Introduction

Have you ever pushed through a tough workout, gasping for air, and wondered just how efficient your body really is at using oxygen? Or maybe you’re training for a marathon but feel like your progress has stalled, leaving you questioning if there’s a better way to optimize your efforts. VO₂ max testing could be the key to unlocking insights into your aerobic capacity, helping you train smarter for better performance and even supporting long-term health. At Vital Performance Care in Calgary, we offer accurate, lab-based VO₂ max testing to guide your fitness journey.

If you’re dealing with performance plateaus or want personalized insights into your aerobic fitness, our team at Vital Performance Care is here to help. Book your VO₂ max testing session today and get started on a customized plan.

What Is VO₂max, Really?

VO₂max, or maximal oxygen uptake, measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilize during intense exercise. It’s expressed in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min) and reflects the efficiency of your cardiovascular, respiratory, and muscular systems working together.

Think of it as your engine’s top ceiling – how much fuel (oxygen) you can process to power your performance. While genetics play a role, VO₂max is highly trainable through consistent aerobic exercise. Higher values are linked to better endurance, but it’s not just for elite athletes; it provides valuable data for anyone aiming to improve fitness or monitor health.

What VO₂max Testing Can Tell You

VO₂ max testing goes beyond a single number. During a lab session, you’ll receive a comprehensive report including:

  • Your VO₂max score: A benchmark of your aerobic fitness level.
  • Heart rate zones: Personalized zones to guide training intensity, from easy recovery to high-threshold efforts.
  • Ventilatory thresholds: Points where your body shifts from aerobic to anaerobic energy production, helping you avoid burnout.
  • Normative data comparison: See how you stack up against others in your age and gender group.

For example, here’s some normative data on VO₂max scores that range from Poor to Excellent for males and females across all age groups:

Studies show that improving VO₂max can enhance performance in sports like running or cycling and even correlate with better longevity by reducing risks of cardiovascular disease.

What VO₂max Testing Can’t Tell You

While powerful, VO₂max testing isn’t a crystal ball. It won’t predict race times on its own – factors like running economy, mental toughness, and nutrition play huge roles. As our coach Rick noted in a previous blog, “Do I Need Lactate and VO₂ Max Testing?“, field tests can sometimes provide similar insights without lab equipment, and VO₂ max alone doesn’t capture the full picture of athletic potential.

It also can’t diagnose underlying health issues; that’s where consulting a professional comes in. If you’re experiencing unexplained fatigue, pair testing with a full assessment from an exercise physiologist. If you’ve never heard of an Exercise Physiologist, what you should know is that they are the only training professionals in Canada trained to perform maximal testing on any individual who’s been cleared to exercise. For more information on the difference between Exercise Physiologists and other types of trainers, we wrote about that HERE.

Who VO₂max Testing Is For

VO₂ max testing is ideal for:

  • Endurance athletes: Runners, cyclists, or triathletes looking to fine-tune training zones.
  • Fitness enthusiasts: Those hitting plateaus and needing data-driven adjustments.
  • Health-focused individuals: Anyone over 40 monitoring longevity markers, as higher VO₂ max is linked to reduced mortality risk.
  • Rehab patients: Tracking progress post-injury with our integrated physiotherapy team.

If you’re in Calgary and serious about performance or longevity, this test provides actionable insights without overwhelming complexity.

VO₂max Booster Program

Knowing your VO₂max and your training zones is great, but what do you do to improve once you know this information? Traditionally this meant years of training and intense training all to improve your VO₂max by just a couple of points on the test. Now there is another way to boost it acutely.

Vital has partnered with O2 max who are world leaders in respiratory and metabolic training to deliver the VO₂max booster program. The booster program is a respiratory muscle training program that delivers breakthrough performance far beyond what conventional training is capable of. Using proprietary O2max tools we integrate isocapnic breathing, CO₂ tolerance and simulated altitude all built on our proven Six Pillars framework. We amplify oxygen delivery (Bohr Effect), enhance CO₂ tolerance (Hamburger Effect) , stimulate EPO production for more red blood cells, recalibrate metabolism to lower VO₂ cost, boost fat utilization and optimize ventilatory efficiency to delay threshold and maximize gas exchange.

The Six Pillars of the VO₂ Max Booster Program:

  • Volume – Bigger Lung Capacity
  • Strength – Stronger inspiratory/expiratory power
  • Coordination– Smarter breathing mechanics
  • Endurance– Fatigue resistant respiratory muscles
  • Mobility – Flexible thoracic + diaphragmatic movement
  • Mind & Body Integration – Sharpened vagal tone and cognitive clarity

This program delivers some very impressive results. Measured Outcomes (0-12 months):

    1. Weeks 1-6: 250-750ml lung capacity increase, + 10-25% V02 MAx, better HRV and VE/VCO2
    2. Months 2-3:  Delayed VT1/VT2, increase stroke volume (ml of O2/ heart beat), surge in EPO production
  • Months 4-12: Sustained V02/thresholds, improved fat oxidation both at rest and active, elevated red blood cell mass, faster recovery, lower V02 cost just to name a few.

Knowing your VO₂max number is just the beginning. There is so much more information to be gained from that test about your limitations, and the VO₂ Booster program helps you address all of those limitations allowing you to reach your full potential. Then you can see how much you have improved in 6-8 weeks by going back in for a re-test of your VO₂max and be amazed by the incredible improvements you have made.

If you are serious about your training and/or longevity goals this program is a great booster. If you’d like to learn more, book a discovery call with Vital’s coach Rick Canning HERE.

Conclusion

VO₂ max testing offers a window into your body’s efficiency, helping you train effectively for performance gains and long-term health benefits. While not essential for everyone – as Rick’s earlier blog points out – accurate lab data can be a game-changer for those ready to level up. Ready to discover your potential?
